Hewes Library functions primarily to support the curriculum of Monmouth College, a four-year, undergraduate, liberal arts institution, founded in 1853. Collections include over 150,000 circulating books, and access to 28,190 periodical titles. Hewes is a U.S. Federal Government Document depository, the oldest in the State of Illinois, serving since the inception of the program in 1860. This collection of federal documents currently exceeds 100,000 print volumes and 200,000 microfiche.
Special Collections include approximately 600 volumes with concentration on 19th Century Presbyterian Church history. The library also houses the Monmouth College Archives; college documents and memorabilia, yearbooks, college newspapers and local history comprising 620 linear feet.

Our 69,000 square foot facility, the heart of the Monmouth College campus is open to the general public. Included among the collections and significant study areas is an enticing coffee shop. The College Art Galleries on the upper level host local and regional artists as well as exhibits from our Art majors. The Shields Gallery of Ancient Art and Antiquities holds collections of rare Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Oriental artifacts.
